What is covered
Netball clubs of every kind, anywhere in the world: women's, men's, mixed, junior, walking and wheelchair. The focus is men's and mixed netball because those clubs were the hardest to find anywhere else. A listing is a club, not a team or a competition: one pin per club, at the courts it plays or trains on. Leagues and associations appear only as the names clubs give for them.
Every listing carries the club's name, type or types, suburb or city, country or territory, venue, training and match days, standard (social, competitive or elite), whether it is taking new players, and a website where the club has one. Optional fields are a short description, the club's own story, season, cost, and welcome flags for beginners, drop-ins and friendlies.
How a club gets listed
- Clubs list themselves. The add-club form takes two minutes and needs no account. The submitter places the pin on the courts before sending.
- Seeded from public sources. The first thousand or so clubs were catalogued by hand from national and state netball bodies, association directories, council venue lists and club websites, region by region. A seeded listing shows no confirmation date until the club confirms it.
- Corrections from anyone. Every listing has an "update this listing" link. A correction goes into the same review queue as a new club.
How it is checked
Nothing goes live automatically. A person (Michael Josem, who runs the site) reads every submission and correction before it is published: is it a real club, is the pin on the courts, is the website the club's own, are the types right. Duplicates are merged. Junior clubs never show an email or phone number publicly, only a website, as a safeguarding rule.
A scheduled check follows every club website link. A link that has moved is updated; one that no longer answers is flagged for review.
How it stays current
Each listing shows the date the club last confirmed it. Clubs get a one-click reconfirm link by email, with no login, and associations can send the same nudge to all their clubs from a dashboard. A listing not confirmed in a year says so. A club the site believes has stopped is marked "May no longer be running" rather than deleted, because a visible warning is more useful than a silent gap. Dormant clubs are left out of counts and the open data's "active" figures.
Every count on the site is computed from the live list at the moment the page is served, and pages say "as at" the date. Numbers quoted from a page are true on that day.
What it does not cover
- Session times. The data has playing days, not times; check the club.
- Fees and season dates, except where a club has written them in.
- Completeness. Coverage is best in Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Ireland, and thinner elsewhere. A place with no pins may have clubs that are not listed yet. The map records where visitors searched and found nothing, so gaps are visible on the map itself.
- Individual contact details in any data file. Email and phone appear only on the HTML club page, for non-junior clubs, so they can be corrected in one place.
Using and citing it
The whole list is open data under CC BY 4.0: GeoJSON, a filterable JSON API described by an OpenAPI file, and Markdown for any club, city or country page by adding .md to its address. llms.txt describes the site for assistants. Credit "Netball Clubs (netballclubs.com)" and give the "as at" date. Every club page has a cite line ready to copy.
